Scanning Old Pictures

Scanning old pictures are a serious pain. You have to get them lined up properly. Set the right DPI. Choose a format that you want to use that is compatible with your photo editing software. Then you have to hope you don't get too much chromatic aberrations from the way the picture lays on the glass.Anyhow I am looking at trying a service ScanMyPhotos which has gotten good reviews and write-ups. Any suggestions or ideas how to non painfully scan a seriously large number of pictures please let me know.
