This really applies to any situation when your at any "special occasion" you want to preserve the moment. But to really get the good shot you have to kind of divorce yourself from your surroundings and think of the shots you want. SO this take you out of the more social aspects of the events and you have to transform your mind to be more of the objective photo guy trying to capture the mood. I find myself constantly wrestling with this. because the nice thing is that if you can do this you have some nice pictures to help you recall the event in the future. But if you do that then you can't really fully participate. Its not a choice I like to make and I often end up not doing either quite well.
