My God its full of stars!
Ahh, and you thought you could escape movie references in this post. The muse of inspiration, that wonderful spout that keeps giving. What would you do to feel her caress. you can have the dedication, you can take all the techniques but most of us including myself would give it away to be inspired. We have all just sat there like that gargoyle with our tongue out..... just hoping against hope something cool will come to us.
To have that creative spark that takes us in a direction and holds our feet to the fire till the creation is done. The trouble is the dance with the muse is scarce and we never know how long she will be with us till she has run away yet again. We all know the story of the 99 % perspiration. I am not going to try and tell you its not true.
That doesn't mean we can't know what kind of place we have to build in order for the dance with creativity to last a bit longer and be more fulfilling. So think about the last time you were hit with the creative itch. Usually its preceded by a period of quiet. We were in a position to hear her taps on the floor. So ask yourself what is your mind like now. Are you rushing here and there trying to "force" it to happen. Maybe a more deliberate tone might help. Going over the little details, thinking of why your putting a blur in the shot. Maybe asking yourself why accept your "go to" shot. What was it about that shot that thrills you? Is it improving your pictures or is it a crutch.
We must give the muse something to work with when we have something on our mind to let it feed. When was the last time you stopped and took a deeper look at a shot. Perhaps asked yourself how many lights were used in the shot, what modifiers did they use and why? Why this pose? What about the negative space, was it necessary for the mood? Not casually looking at this photograph or another one taking a study of the accepted "greats" not just the popular. Why? so you can chew on some more hardier stuff than the instant high of a popular Instagram post. The more you study the more you can make sense of what you are trying to craft.
Oh yes, do some real reading.... Maybe listen to some new albums. Eat some great meals you made with your own hands. Spend time with people laughing or more importantly crying. Live your life and feel the pump of your heart beating with life. And when you finally look at that large blank slate.... you'll gasp "My God its full of Stars"
